Auslan Storytime

In my role as Digital Media Producer at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (now NextSense), I was responsible for the design and production of the Auslan Storytime App.

Users can view a classic children’s story with a young Auslan student “signing” the story with an accompanying audio voiceover. This is great inclusive tool for families and friends to engage with young Auslan students. There is also a Sign Dictionary which loads videos of relevant words and phrases.

I created storyboards for the illustrators, worked with Auslan (Australian sign language) teachers to ensure the scripts would translate correctly and managed the filming and post production involved in bringing the app together.

I’m particularly proud of this project as I had the chance to work regularly with the Auslan educators and students and could continually test and review if the concept was working. At first the students were hesitant to be involved but once they saw the first story produced they all wanted to tell a story. There was a great deal of excitement and pride from the students when they could see themselves and peers in the final app.
